On February 2, 2017, Syd (lead singer of The Internet) released her debut album labeled Fin. This album is a bundle of twelve solid tracks that has many different feels and soulful vibes to it. From the sharp drum collection on "Shake 'Em Off" (produced by Hit-Boy), to the smooth Aaliyah-like vibe on "Know", Syd made sure to bless us with it all. With more fearless lyrics mixed with her timeless melodies, Syd shapes this album into a masterpiece of her own. The content on the album captures a confident, seductive, honest and raunchy side of Syd all in one sitting - which makes for the perfect R&B album. Also, something that we have never completely heard from her before.
The depth of the content on this album suggests that Syd is in the midst of a breakthrough as an artist and individual. To add to her authenticity, next to the originality of writing every song on the album, she also produced a handful of songs herself (Smile More, No Complaint & Nothin to Somethin). On "Drown In It", Syd takes an interlude to talk about how she really feels about a woman and what she wants to do with her over a smooth Janet Jackson vibe. While on "Nothin to Somethin" she steps aside from the neo-soul and gives us a swagged out version of herself. With her confident bars over this smooth west coast sound, she takes no losses.
A few of my favorite moments in the album are on "Know" with the classic Timbaland sounding beat, the feature of 6lack on "Over", and the unique mix of hip-hop & soul on "Nothin to Somethin". What a dope debut!
